New research reveals that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
